A Chilly Weekend, Then Warmer Again Next Week
Today’s gusty winds were a prelude to colder weather for the weekend, as a trough allows colder Canadian air to reach all the way to Florida, where it’s expected to almost reach freezing in Orlando on Friday night. Fortunately, with our current dry air, it’s unlikely we’ll see any precipitation, although it’s possible that there may be some flurries in the North Georgia mountains.
After Saturday, things warm up again, with daytime temperatures in the lower 60s, and overnight lows in the 40s. The warm pattern is expected to last through mid month, with a chance of less than normal rainfall during the period.
Our weather continues to be controlled by a split-flow pattern that is keeping (in large part) colder weather to the north. When the pattern does break, we either get a short-lived cold spell like we’re going to see this weekend, or we get Gulf of Mexico moisture, which leads to the thunderstorms and tornadoes we saw earlier this week, and in late December.
This somewhat unusual weather pattern is wreaking havoc on other areas of the country as well. If you saw the Rose Bowl Parade on Monday, you saw the unusually heavy rains that have affected much of California. Meanwhile, much of Texas and Oklahoma is suffering from a dry spell, with a high risk of wildfires, and no real precipitation in sight. The colder weather is bottled up in New England, where many areas are colder than normal, and have seen more snow than normal this season.
