November Bows Out; A Cool December in Store?
The weather in November, 2005 appeared to be divided into two equal parts. Prior to the 16th, we enjoyed dry, fall conditions, with the temperature rising as high as 80 degrees on the 8th. After the 16th, we didn’t see a day where the temperature rose above 70 degrees. The month stayed drier than normal as well, with only 1.94 inches of rain, about 55% of the normal 3.8 inches we would expect. Overall, the month ended with a mean temperature of 53 degrees, which is just about normal when you compare Atlanta’s normal 53.6, and Athens’ 52.9 mean temperatures.
Interestingly enough, both Atlanta and Athens have overall warmer temperatures than what I recorded here in Lawrenceville, although this might be because I live at the bottom of a hill, where it can stay a little chillier in the mornings until the sun gets out. Atlanta also recorded a trace of snow on the 21st.
So, what to expect for December? The official monthly forecast from the Weather Service calls for equal chances of above or below temperatures and rainfall for North Georgia, with cool weather in the Northeast United States, and warm weather in the Southwest. Wet weather is expected in the Pacific Northwest, and dry conditions are expected in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, with the rest of the country seeing equal chances of above or below normal precipitation.
However, if you look at the extended forecast from December 6th through 14th, a cool trend is predicted for North Georgia, with about average rainfall. It’s way too early to think about who will be seeing a white Christmas.
