April was Cooler, Drier than Normal
As April winds, up it turned out to be slightly cooler than normal in Lawrenceville, with less rain than would be expected. The average temperature of 59.5 degrees was about one degree cooler than normal; while our 2.78 inches of rain was 1.25 inches less than what would be normal.
It was a month of contrasting weeks, with the first week of the month starting out with a rare April snow, although unofficial, on the second. That wrapped up a wet period, and gave way to a nice stretch of weather through the first two thirds of the month, including the month’s high of 81 degrees on the 18th. Following some severe weather, including a bit of hail on the 22nd, the weather turned colder, with a record low of 36.8 degrees on Sunday the 24th, and while not a record, the lowest temperature of the month at 35.5 degrees on the 25th. The cooler weather continued through the end of the month.
What’s ahead? The newly issued monthly forecast from the Weather Service for May, 2005 calls for normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. For the three month period through July, look for above normal temperature, and below normal precipitation.
After a cool start to the month, with daily highs in the low 70s and a chance of precipitation each day after Tuesday, we’re likely to see above normal temperatures and normal to above normal rainfall to finish off the first half of the month. Keep in mind that the average daily high for May 1 is 77 degrees, while the high at the end of the month is 83. The more important figure might be the average morning low, which starts the month at 55, and ends at 64 degrees. By the end of the month, looking at the normals, we’ll be 10 degrees warmer than at the start.
