February Halftime Weather Review

At the beginning of the month, the National Weather Service predicted above normal temperatures and normal precipitation for February. Halfway into the month, here’s where we stand:

Area-wide, we’ve had above normal temperatures. The mean temperature here is was 44.6 degrees, about a degree above normal. We’re also below normal for precipitation, with only 1.29 inches, compared with a normal of around 2.2 inches. While we may have some rain tonight and tomorrow, it appears that the worst of the weather will be to our north.

Higher than normal temps and lower than normal precipitation are also the case in Athens, Atlanta and Gainesville, although with slightly differing amounts.

For the rest of the month, after about half an inch of rain overnight and into Monday morning, we’ll have the best day of the week on Tuesday, with highs approaching 70. Pleasant, but slightly cooler later in the week as a high pressure system approaches from the west.

Precipitation returns next weekend, and then again just after President’s day, and the month finishes off with seasonable temperatures.

So, is winter over? Low temperatures are currently predicted to stay above freezing for the rest of the month, as the jetstream tends to stay to our north, combined with the normal springtime warming we see with the longer days this time of year. That being said, I think that wintry weather is still a possibility.

Several forecasters have pointed out that in December and January, the beginning of the month was warmer than normal, followed by a cold blast and wintry weather. While we just missed some Christmastime snow, we did have a warm spell in the first half of January, followed by the freezing rain/sleet storm the last weekend of the month. So far, February is following the pattern.

We’ll just have to see.
